Cemetery Preservations Current Project
Our current project is a beautiful and quite cemetery located on Glenn Club Dr in Stone Mountain Georgia called Pleasant Grove Methodist Church Cemetery. This cemetery is over grown and in need of a good cleaning but is still well kept. A lot of the trees around the property are dead and falling. Actually a few of them have.
Most of the stones are in good condition. There are a good few that have nothing left of them but a stub.
This cemetery contains 117 known graves. 100 are marked and 17 are marked by badly broken stones.
Transcriptions of this cemetery were completed on May 18, 2003.
My partner (my sister Michele) found this cemetery on Feb. 15, 2003. It was in bad condition with overgrown grass and a good many fallen trees. The ivy in the back is very over grown.
Our goal is to have this cemetery cleaned and looking better than ever before Sept 20, 2003.
From talking to people passing and a few resources I've tried so far, there was a Methodist church located some where close to the property that burned down some time in early 1900's. Also looking at the mortality records in the area there was also a large out break of a flu epidemic and that mixed with the depression of the times may have caused the deaths of a lot of these individuals. A lot of the graves seem to be young mothers with children that have passed with or not too long after birth.
Hopefully we can get more information on this cemetery and its origin as soon as we can.
